Connect Facebook Messenger

Step-by-step guide to connecting your Facebook Page to Interlinked AI — authorize through Meta OAuth and let your AI agent handle Facebook Messenger conversations automatically.

Last updated:

What this connection does

Connecting Facebook Messenger allows your Interlinked AI agent to receive and respond to Messenger conversations that originate from your Facebook Page. When a customer clicks the “Message” button on your Page, sends you a message through Messenger, or initiates a conversation through a Facebook ad with a “Send Message” call-to-action, the AI agent handles the conversation using your published configuration.

All Messenger conversations are visible in the CRM inbox, where you can monitor AI responses, take manual control, and manage interactions alongside conversations from Instagram and WhatsApp.

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A Facebook Page — You need an active Facebook Page for your business. Personal profiles cannot receive messages through the API.
  • Messaging enabled on your Page — In your Facebook Page Settings → General → Messages, ensure that “Allow people to contact my Page privately” is turned on.
  • Admin access — The Meta account you use to authorize must have admin permissions on the Facebook Page you want to connect.
  • A Meta Business Portfolio (recommended) — While not strictly required for initial connection, having your Page associated with a Meta Business Portfolio (formerly Business Manager) provides better long-term stability for API access.

Note

If you manage multiple Facebook Pages, you can select which one to connect during the authorization process. Each Interlinked workspace connects to one Facebook Page for Messenger at a time.

How to connect Facebook Messenger

Step 1: Open the connection screen

You can connect Facebook Messenger in two places:

  • During onboarding — On the Connect channels step of the setup wizard, find the Facebook Messenger card and click Connect.
  • After publishing — In the AI Config wizard, navigate to the Channels step and click Connect on the Facebook Messenger card.

Step 2: Authorize with Meta

After clicking Connect, you are redirected to Meta’s authorization page. This is Meta’s official OAuth flow — your credentials are entered directly on Meta’s secure domain.

On the Meta authorization screen:

  1. Log in to your Meta account if you are not already signed in.
  2. Review the permissions Interlinked is requesting. These are limited to messaging capabilities on your Facebook Page.
  3. Select the Facebook Page you want to connect to Interlinked. If you have multiple Pages, choose the one that represents the business you configured in Interlinked.
  4. Click Allow to grant Interlinked messaging permissions.

Step 3: Return to Interlinked

After authorization, you are redirected back to Interlinked with the Facebook Messenger channel showing as Connected. The redirect URL includes a success parameter confirming the connection was established.

If you are in the onboarding wizard, you remain on the Connect channels step so you can connect additional channels before publishing.

What happens after connection

Once Facebook Messenger is connected and your AI agent is published:

  • New Messenger conversations appear in the CRM inbox under the Facebook tab.
  • The AI responds using your published configuration — greeting message, workflow, product catalog, and business context.
  • Conversation history is stored in the CRM, including both AI-generated and manual responses.
  • You can take manual control of any Messenger conversation at any time from the CRM. See Switch between AI and manual control.

Messenger-specific behaviors

Supported message types

Facebook Messenger supports text messages, images, and videos. The AI agent can receive and process all of these types.

Page visitor conversations

Messenger conversations can start from several entry points:

  • The Message button on your Facebook Page
  • Facebook ads with “Send Message” call-to-action
  • Direct Messenger searches for your business name
  • Comment-to-message flows from your Page posts

All of these entry points create conversations that the AI agent handles and that appear in the CRM.

Greeting and ice breakers

Facebook Pages may have a built-in Messenger greeting configured in Page settings. Once Interlinked is connected, the AI agent’s greeting message (configured in your workflow) takes over as the primary response. You may want to update or disable the Page-level Messenger greeting to avoid duplicate introductions.

Response time badge

Facebook displays a response time badge on your Page (e.g., “Usually responds within minutes”). With an AI agent handling conversations 24/7, your response time will typically be classified as “Usually responds instantly,” which helps build customer confidence.

Permissions explained

When you authorize Interlinked through Meta OAuth, the following permissions are requested:

PermissionWhat it allows
Read messagesInterlinked can receive incoming Messenger messages sent to your Page
Send messagesInterlinked can send responses on behalf of your Facebook Page
Page accessInterlinked can identify your Page and access its messaging inbox

Interlinked does not request permissions to:

  • Post on your Facebook Page timeline
  • Manage your Facebook ads
  • Access personal profile information
  • View Page insights or analytics

Disconnecting Facebook Messenger

If you need to disconnect Messenger, you can do so from the AI Config wizard Channels step or from your Meta Business Settings. See Manage connected channels for detailed steps.

Important

Disconnecting Facebook Messenger stops the AI agent from receiving and responding to Messenger conversations on that Page. Existing conversation history in the CRM is preserved.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues connecting Facebook Messenger, check the following:

  • Messaging is disabled on your Page — Go to Page Settings → General → Messages and enable “Allow people to contact my Page privately.”
  • Insufficient permissions — Make sure the Meta account you use to authorize has admin access to the Facebook Page.
  • Wrong Page selected — If you have multiple Pages, verify you selected the correct one during authorization. You can disconnect and reconnect to choose a different Page.
  • Authorization was cancelled — If you closed the Meta OAuth window before completing authorization, try connecting again.
  • Connection lost — Meta tokens can expire if permissions are changed on the Page. Reconnect from AI Config.
